All About Tucson

Tucson, Arizona is a gem of a community.  Nestled in a valley between four mountain ranges, Tucson's 2500 foot elevation is correctly described as high Sonoran desert.  The surrounding mountains are a ever-changing and beautiful backdrop for valley dwellers while providing a wonderful range of outdoor recreational activities.  Mt. Lemmon, part of the Catalina Mountains, has an excellent paved roadway that will take visitors to it's 9100 foot top, while offering expansive vistas of more than 50 miles along the way.  Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley is the southernmost ski resort in the United States.  Mt. Wrightson, in the Santa Rita Mountains is over 9400 feet, albeit with no way to the top except by foot.  Hikers, campers and cyclists are drawn to these pine covered "sky islands", all part of the Coronado National Forest.

Tucson bears the nickname "The Old Pueblo" and is arguably one of the oldest continuously populated areas in the U.S.  There is evidence of human activities here as long ago as 4,000 years.  The second largest city in Arizona and ranked 32nd nationally, Tucson and southern Arizona was made part of the U.S. Territory after the Gadsden Purchase (1853).  The 2010 census puts the "city" population of just over 500,000.  Including the "metro" area brings that number to just over 1million.

Tucson is the home of the University of Arizona established in 1885.  The university has almost 30,000 undergraduate students and approximately 8,000 graduate and professional/medical students.  Affiliated with the Pacific 12 Conference the Wildcats of Arizona compete in a variety of athletic sports competitions, ranking the National Championship in Basketball in 1997 as a crowning achievement.

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base is also located in Tucson, established in 1947.  The base is an important training and support base for the A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft.  The excellent climate in Tucson provides for almost unlimited opportunity for pilots to hone their skills and the nearby Barry Goldwater Air Force Gunnery Range provides added exposure to combat applications of firepower and airborne weapons.

Leading a group of major employers is Raytheon Missile Systems with over 10,000 employees.  Other major employers both private and public include, the University of Arizona, Walmart, University of Arizona Healthcare, State of Arizona and Davis-Monthan Airforce Base.

Tucson's climate is a major draw for transplants and sun worshippers.  Fall and Spring offer outstanding temperatures and lots of sun drenched days while Winter is extremely mild.  Summer months can be on the warm side but the elevated Tucson valley and lots of natural growth allow for significant cooling once the sun drops below the horizon.  July through September provide a welcome "monsoon" season yielding the majority of the 12 inches of annual rainfall.

Major tourist attractions include the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Old Tucson Studios, Kartchner Caverns, Tombstone, Bisbee and Nogales, Arizona (a port of entry to Mexico).
